
Getting Your KBA and M&R Flash Curing Back Up to Speed
If you’re running an industrial printing line, you know the drill. You need the ink to set fast, but you can’t risk scorching the fabric or paper. When it comes time to replace the lamps in your KBA or M&R systems, you aren’t just shopping for a light bulb. You’re looking for something that hits that sweet spot of heat and power so your production doesn’t grind to a halt. The trick is all in the power density. We build our lamps to be simple drop-in replacements. No fussing around. We focus heavily on the wattage-to-length ratio—basically, how much heat is packed into every inch of the tube. We tweak the tungsten filament and the quartz thickness to make sure the heat flux matches what your machine expects. Why does that matter? Because if the wattage is off, you’re in trouble. You’ll either end up with tacky, under-cured ink or, worse, a burnt hole right through your substrate. Built to survive the heat. Thermal cycling is brutal on equipment. To stop the tubes from warping, we use high-purity fused quartz. We also keep the tolerances on the R7s and SK15 connectors incredibly tight. There’s nothing more frustrating than fighting a housing just to get a lamp wired up, so we make sure they fit right the first time. We also calibrated the halogen cycle to push tungsten back onto the filament. It sounds technical, but all it means is that the lamp lasts longer. It won’t burn out the second you start hitting those high-frequency flashing cycles. Real-world talk: What to watch for. Switching to a professional alternative instead of the OEM brand is a great way to cut down on maintenance costs without slowing down your line. You get the same output, so your speed stays exactly where it needs to be. But here is a heads-up: shortwave lamps put out some serious, concentrated heat. If you’re tempted to bump up the wattage to try and squeeze more speed out of your production, be careful. Your cooling fans and exhaust systems have to be able to handle that extra load. If the ends of the lamp overheat, the seals will fail. Also, do yourself a favor—check your contact points for oxidation before you slide the new lamp in. It takes two seconds, and it saves you from the headache of arcing at the terminals.
