Why the Gold?
You’ll notice a gold coating on the back of the tube. It’s not there to look fancy. Think of it as a mirror for heat. A clear tube just throws energy in every direction, which is a waste. The gold layer catches those rear-facing waves and bounces them straight back toward your workpiece. It’s a huge win for your hardware. You get all your energy where it belongs, and you stop your machine’s chassis from soaking up heat it doesn’t need. Your housing components will actually last longer because they aren’t being baked from the inside out.
A Few Heads-Ups for the Install
Here is the catch: carbon fiber is tough, but that gold coating is a bit moody. Do not touch the tubes with your bare hands. Seriously. The oils from your skin will bake right into the coating the first time it heats up. That creates “hot spots,” and that’s a fast track to a dead tube. One more thing before you flip the switch. Since these things ramp up so fast, make sure your PID controller is tuned properly. If your controller is too slow, you’ll blow right past your target temperature. Also, check your cooling fans. The gold reflector concentrates the heat so well that it can actually warp your mounting brackets if you don’t have enough airflow to keep the surrounding parts cool.
