Most carbon fiber tubes come in that same old black weave. It’s classic, sure, but it’s not always practical. Sometimes you need a part to stand out—maybe for a specific look, or more likely, so your team doesn’t grab the wrong part during a frantic assembly. That’s why we make tubing with the color built right in.
How we actually get the color in there
Since carbon fiber is naturally black, you can’t just “dye” the fiber itself. Instead, we do one of two things. First, we can mix pigments directly into the epoxy resin while we’re pultruding the tube. This is the way to go if you don’t want to worry about paint flaking or peeling when things get rough. The color is part of the structure. If that’s not the right fit, we can apply a high-grade, UV-resistant coating over the finished tube. Either way, you get a piece that looks great and helps you visually categorize your parts or safety zones without adding unnecessary weight.
The honest trade-offs
Look, nothing is perfect. When you add pigments to resin, it can change how the epoxy bonds—just a bit. You won’t really notice a difference in stiffness, but the impact resistance might shift depending on how much pigment we’re using. It’s something to keep in mind when you’re figuring out your load requirements. And a quick tip: if your project involves a lot of rubbing or abrasion, go with a clear hard-coat. Otherwise, you might eventually wear through the color and find yourself staring at the black fiber core again.
Putting them to work
We see these pop up everywhere—robotic arms, drone frames, or medical gear where a color-coding mistake could be a real headache. We can handle the cutting and chamfer the ends, so they just slide right into your existing chassis. One thing to remember: carbon fiber conducts electricity. Make sure your grounding is solid so you don’t deal with any annoying static buildup. Also, keep an eye on your temperatures. The resin and the pigments have a breaking point (the glass transition temperature). If things get too hot, the tube will lose its rigidity and start to soften. Keep it cool, and you’re golden.
