To make them survive, we take a carbon fiber filament, tuck it inside a quartz envelope, and seal the whole thing with specialized end-caps. It’s basically an armor suit for your heat source.
How the heat actually works
Here’s the thing about carbon fiber: it doesn’t behave like those old tungsten filaments. It puts out medium-to-long wave infrared radiation. In plain English? The heat sinks deeper into whatever you’re warming up instead of just scorching the surface. When you’re picking your lamp, look at the wattage-per-centimeter. More wattage means more intense heat. Just a heads-up, though—make sure your power supply can handle that first big “gulp” of electricity when you flip the switch. That initial cold-start surge can be a killer if you aren’t ready for it.
The “Waterproof” part (and the catch)
The secret sauce is in the hermetic seal at the electrode junctions. We use high-temp silicone or ceramic seals to keep water away from the electrical contacts. But listen, while the quartz glass can handle the heat, it’s still glass. It’s fragile. **Be gentle during installation.**If you let these tubes take a beating or if they crack, the carbon filament hits the air, oxidizes, and burns out instantly. Once that happens, it’s game over.
Setting them up without the headaches
If you’re putting these in a wet zone, you can’t just plug them into a wall socket and hope for the best. You’ll need a rated junction box to keep the whole system safe. And a quick tip from experience: those sealed end-caps can trap a bit of heat right at the terminals. If you’re running your lamps at 100% in a tight space, that heat can actually eat away at your wiring insulation over time. To avoid that, just leave a 20mm air gap around the end-caps. Give them some room to breathe. As long as the length and diameter match your current setup, these should slide right in as a replacement for your standard IR lamps.
